In the time era of the 1450’s to the 1650’s, Europe transcended from being modest players in the trading world of the Indian Ocean to dominating beast of the Atlantic Ocean. During the 1400s Europe did not produce the goods that were desired by the elites of the time. They also endured a plagued called the Black Death. However, as time went on novel technology surfaced. There was a new desire to spread the Christian faith, which lead to explorers voyaging the seas, and the creation of the New World.
There were essential factors in which facilitated the expansion of European during this era. The first being that merchants provided the capital with means for many early voyages. There were different individual motives across the European continent. For instance, Prince Henry (ca 1394-1460), who is also known as Henry “the Navigator,” he supported the study of geography and navigation. In which he sponsored annual expeditions down the western coast of Africa. His contribution ensured that Portugal did not abandon the effort despite early disappointments. In the 1420’s, under Henry’s lead, the Portuguese began to take control of the Atlantic islands of Madeirs and the Azores. Christopher Columbus, in 1486 was rejected for the proper funding for the voyage by Ferdinand and Isabella of Portugal. However, with determination he did not give up and in 1492, the Spanish monarchy granted him support. Columbus believed Christianity was a missionary religion that ought to be carried to all places on earth. He aimed to discover new territories where Christianity could be spread while seeking a direct trade route to Asia.
