Rough Beginnings It was 1915 and the music scene was just getting hot. New Orleans was busting at the seam with young cats prowling the streets, lurking in seedy after-hours clubs looking to get a wild jam session in before the night was through. An insanely talented and equally arrogant ragtime pianist by the name of Jelly Roll Morton began to play with a different kind of flavor that drove audiences crazy, and with that the invention of Jazz was born. The heavy syncopated beats making your pulse jump, the bluesy lilt of a melody lapping lazily at your senses; this was the time to be alive.
How could these documents be used to explain a driving force behind European imperialism in Africa? These document could be used to explain through a few of different things like technological advancements, African colonies and raw materials they had, and economic factors. These are three reasons to help explain the driving force behind European imperialism and also could answer questions that go along with the main question like why the Europeans imperialized Africa. Why did it have to be Africa at all? These are all questions and ways to explain the main question.
The Igbos, who were located in West Africa, did not develop a new type of government similar to the Yoruba and Bini. They had begun to grow small states and urban centers, but the Igbo who had a dense population and extensive trading networks declined to follow. Igbo deliberately rejected the kingship and state-building efforts of their neighbors. The Igbos did not have no kings and they relied on institutions to maintain order beyond the village. They traded among themselves and with the large African kingdom of Songhai for cotton cloth, fish, copper and iron goods, and decorative objects.

This is because, as the document says, this was used as a treatment for the disease malaria, which prevented much of the population from developing this deadly disease.

What was the driving force behind European Imperialism in Africa? Between 1500 and 1800 the Europeans knew little about the interior of Africa their presence was to buy and sell slaves for pots, cloth, and weapons and set sail to America. Late as 1870 ten percent of Africa was under Europeans control and most was along edges by 1914 ninety percent of Africa was in control four years later. Due to the countries that held African colonies in 1914 that involved the British, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spain, and Belgian. As the world approached the 20th century, several powers grew desperate far more land and more control. Between the 1870 and 1900 years, Africa and Asia faced European imperialist aggression, diplomatic pressures, military invasion, and eventual conquest and colonization. The event that happened in Africa and Asia during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries had pushed African and Asian to make important political decisions in order to properly respond to Western imperialism. In that period, neither African people or Asian had the power to stand against to the Western imperialism, and eventually both continents had to sign unequal treaties that forced them to open their ports and cities to foreign merchants.
The effects of imperialism was quite chaotic in the beginning causing an up rise from Africa and the Middle East. At first both resisted but over time western ways was making it’s way into a part of the daily routine. The imperialism started with Africa and eventually moved into the Middle East, but when it started in Africa it was for the natural resources the country possessed at the time. The Middle East was different due to the ruler at the time, Muhammad Ali was the ruler of Egypt and wanted to modernize Egypt the way he wanted to. He is sometimes known as “Father of Modern Egypt” although when he died they was not a leader that was as strong as he was to hold up his empire.
These cultures were no longer retained after white men came and “told them they worshipped false gods, gods of wood and stone” (145). These harsh ideas on the Igbo people led them to abandon their own religion and take up the new religion if it meant change for the Igbo people. This strict cultural change left harsh damage to the current culture of the Igbo people. This culture should have been retained but it was destroyed and abandoned for a new culture, one of the Christian faith and newly formed

Even though European countries, like France, Great Britain and Portugal, had very few establishments in Africa, they were constantly trading with them. Later, as Europeans tried conquer African land, native people became frustrated and upset; in response to imperialism. As Europeans states industrialized, they wanted to expand overseas and establish colonies in Africa.
The women were still treated the same in Ghana, but the family started to change. When they married the white men they were having children that were both white and black. They also did not have as many wives. Part of this was they could not afford more than one or two like Ohene Nyarko (152). Another reason was because the white men only married one woman and their children normally held this belief
First, gender roles in a society have a huge cause and effect that affects the people in the society, in the novel things fall apart these roles greatly affect family life. An example of this is how Okonkwo, the main protagonist in things fall apart, leads his family. Okonkwo is very strict and expects his wives and children to obey his every command, this caused his young wives and children to be scared of him. “Okonkwo ruled his household with a heavy hand. His wives, especially the youngest, lived in perpetual fear of his fiery temper, and so did his little children”(13).
People all over the world worship many gods, goddesses, and other higher beings. Some religions are monotheistic, worship one god or goddess, others are polytheistic, worship multiple gods and goddesses. The Igbo tribe is polytheistic because they worship many gods, goddesses, and spirits; such as, they worship a god named Chukwu, two minor gods, a minor goddess, and six different spirits. The first and most important being they worship, as stated by world eras, is a god named Chukwu.
