Euthanasia and assisted suicide are becoming growing problems in today’s society. Euthanasia is defined as, “any action or omission which of itself or by intention causes death, with the purpose of eliminating all suffering,” (Pennock, 2008). Assisted suicide is defined as, “the intentional assistance of any dying or suffering person in taking his or her own life,” (Pennock, 2008). Both of these problems go against the fifth commandment, which is “you shall not kill.” Jesus’ view on euthanasia and assisted suicide is that they are both sinful.

Jesus and the Bible teaches Catholics about how important and precious life is. They would all agree that life is the most precious gift possible. Therefore, one should do whatever they possibly can in order to preserve it. This is where euthanasia and assisted suicide come into the question. These do not preserve life, they end it and go against what Jesus teaches.

Voluntary euthanasia is when one chooses to end their own life. Involuntary euthanasia is when a relative or close friend takes on the decision of ending one’s life. Although there are many different types of euthanasia, they are all wrong in the eyes of Jesus. Whether one decides or one’s relative decides to use euthanasia as a means to end one’s life, you are denying God His power. Jesus teaches to let nature take its course, when it comes to the end of one’s life. God chooses when one dies. Human beings are not to play God when it comes to choosing when someone dies. Instead, Jesus calls humans to make the end of life process as comfortable as possible for the individual who is dying. When one is lying on their deathbed, Catholics are called to give the patient the basic necessities one needs for everyday survival, such as food, water and
