The Contender Essay Lionel Messi, a top class soccer player and widely considered best in the world has once said “You have to fight to reach your dream. You have to sacrifice and work hard for it.” This statement is as straightforward as straightforward could possibly get. Many people at the top today in what they do aren’t there with no rationale. They’re there because they were willing to put in the work, a lot of it, too, and willing to sacrifice a lot. Many people living their dream today were willing to work hard for it, as well. Boxing, for example. With boxing, it is agreed by many, or even all top boxers that it is not easy to be the best. There’ll always be someone much better, this goes for really everything, as well, so one would have to at the least focus on being the best you can be before being the best of all. Hard work is very important. Alfred, the story’s main protagonist, worked very hard. He took things very, very seriously. Donatelli, his coach advised him to jog daily and go on a strict diet. Alfred simply did as he was advised to and the sacrifice he made just shows how much he wanted to do it, how much he wanted to be a contender. Another example of his hard work is the fact that he pushed past all the pain he felt during the course of training. The pain from all the workouts and practice matches, he pushed past it. He had to really work hard to do something like that and at one point, he wanted to give up, but again he really wanted it. Alfred Brooks’ work ethic was quite the outstanding one. It was, as one would say, very optimal. He really just put so much effort into everything he did during raining. He was definitely not a slouch.
