At the time Everyman was written many people could not read. For this reason, plays were a popular way for people to get entertainment and valuable lessons. Morality plays were created to teach people about Christ and how to live a moral, God-centered life. Also it showed people a realness of death from a sinful life. Morality plays were most popular in the 15th and 16th century. Whereas “Everyman” is the best know morality play. “Everyman” was first seen in the 16th century in England however the author is unknown. In the play “Everyman” the characters are human beings that have been modeled after virtues ad vices. The first character is the Messenger he is acting as the narrator of the story. God is angry at humans for their sinful life and sends Death to tell Everyman he will be judged by God as he dies. The main character is called Everyman in order to be seen as all of mankind. After living a sinful life Everyman was told he was going to die, he turns to all his friends to help him however he is deserted by all but Good Deeds. Since he is dying he must also be judged by God and therefore must leave his sin behind. The first friend to leave Everyman is Fellowship. Fellowship is there to represent friends yet he offers to take Everyman drinking and out with women to comfort him in dealing with his death. Rich and poor people both must die eventually and belongings do not go with you. “Death does not consider someone’s position in the society, social class, status, or title” (Admin, Author). In “Everyman” God, says that humans are “so combred with worldly ryches / That nedes on them I must do iustice” (Everyman 60-61). They are so overwhelmed with having the best things which causes God to bring Death upon them. It was Everyman’s faith in the “worldly ryches” that caused God to be angry. God was sending Death to all those who did not have faith in him. The author treats death as a punishment for the sinful life. Which further emphasizes the message to live a God-centered
