Chapter 18 of Everyone’s An Author explained to the readers that it’s extremely important for us to use strategies for supporting our argument. Also, the strategies for supporting our argument helps us as a student with much of the writing we do in college because it serves us as useful tools for generating ideas. In order to do so, we should use example, description, humor, and classification as the convincing evidence to support our argument. Firstly, using example is a vital step to support our argument because It can support the writer’s contention that a general statement is true. It can not only provide specifics and details in support of an argument, but helps to capture and retain the reader’s attention. Also, using examples to back up statements of fact can add value to your essay. An argument without examples would probably make your writing vague, which makes it difficult for your readers to understand what the meaning of your statement is. Descriptive writing is when we use carefully selected words to help create a vivid picture in the reader’s mind. The primary purpose of descriptive writing is to describe a picture of a person, place, or an object in such a way that a picture is formed in the reader’s mind. Likewise, capturing an event through descriptive writing involves paying close attention to the details by using all of your five sense, which is hearing, smell, taste, touch, and sight. Also, outstanding descriptive writing often make use of figurative language such as analogies, metaphors and smiles to help paint the picture in the reader’s mind. Furthermore, descriptive writing helps student’s writing be more interesting and full of details, as well as encourage them to use new vocabulary words.
