The theme of Everything Sad is Untrue by Daniel Nayeri is that losing something important to you is painful, but moving on is more crucial. This theme progresses throughout the book as Daniel experiences more trauma in different chapters. For example, he lost Orich bars, Mr. Sheep Sheep, his dad, etc. Therefore, Daniel's character develops the theme. For example, on page 226-227 he says “I wrench my eyes upward, without tilting my head- my strategy for holding back tears. Only after being friends with him my whole life, I am supposed to leave Mr.Sheep Sheep to die.” In this part of the story Daniel's family is getting chased by the committee men, and they need to hurry and go to the airport before they get killed, and if Daniel doesn’t leave Mr. Sheep Sheep behind, then they won’t be able to escape because of the luggage shortage. This evidence supports Daniel’s character and develops my theme, because Daniel leaving Mr. Sheep Sheep behind shows the reader that Daniel understands that leaving Mr. Sheep Sheep will help protect his …show more content…
On page 350 Daniel says ”I was terrified of what she’d say, because all this time, I had held on to that one memory like a peach pit in my pocket. It was mine, and it was the only one I had of my Baba Haji. I closed my eyes, because I had lost my Baba Haji. In this part of the story Daniel asks his mom about his baba haji and if his 1 memory of him that he remembered was correct but his mom didn’t give him the news he wanted to hear, and said his memory he remembered wasn’t true and explained what really happened, and he got sad because his 1 memory of his grandfather was not correct. This conflict develops my theme because it shows how losing the memory of Baba Haji was difficult for him and very frustrating. Especially because he really cared about his baba haji. But Daniel has to push through the truth and accept what his mom told him about what really happened to his Baba
