Does evil reside in your thoughts or in your blood? Evil can take over those who want it to, but some let it take over so that they can get through life. In the text “The Guilty Party” by O’Henry the people are evil by circumstance because the girl is being neglected by her father who made her act the way she does. In the text John Q, John is evil by circumstance because John was in a very rough situation with money and had to pay for his kid's heart surgery which didn’t come for free. So he did what he did in order to save his son. He had to violently acquire what he wanted and it was all under the circumstances. An example of proof from the film John Q is that the insurance meant to pay for his son's operation no longer worked because his company messed him over and converted him from full to half-time, so the insurance wouldn't cover anything. When John Q is battling for his dying son and there is a means to help him, but the hospital won't because they lack the funds, this becomes John Q's bad by circumstance. In order to fix this problem, John Q occupied the hospital and kidnapped hostages, hoping that ultimately the hospital would pay for his treatment. John Q committed this heist with the intention of causing no harm. John's gun had no bullets put in it to disprove this idea. And to further demonstrate this, the hospital hostages that he held spoke well of him and even backed his decision to carry out what he was doing. Even during his sentence to jail, all the hostages spoke forward with only positive things about him. This made him less evil because his intentions were just to help his son live, not to put anyone's life in danger. Therefore John Q is evil by circumstance because of the rough situation he was
