Eva Bekele Mrs. Schonhoff English 10 Honors Period 6 4/10/2024 Human Nature Truth: Naturally Evil. The conversation about whether human nature is good, or evil is often a long one. While many people believe human nature is good, and some others say it’s evil, this calls for a better understanding. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding a better understanding of human nature is provided by his views of human nature being evil, which is an accurate statement due to the human traits of manipulation and power hunger. In Goldings Lord of the Flies, the boys discuss who to be chief. Jack suggests "I ought to be chief... because I'm chapter chorister and head boy." I can sing C sharp” (Gold 22). This highlights how Jack believes his position and skills make him more deserving of power and control over the others on the island. Jacks power hunger is overwhelming and once he does he gets power he abuses everyone under him. Once Jack knew his words were absolute, his true human nature was exposed, and this hunger for power caused destruction and evil. The trait of hunger for power is not only seen in Lord of the Flies, but also seen in Animal Farm. Napoleon is a great example of this because of his lack of care for what he does as long as he gets power. While Napoleon has lots of rules, a rule that shows his true hunger for power is his rule that “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” (Orwell 40). This demonstrates Napoleon's twist on the original rules of Animalism to consolidate his own power. His power hunger reveals his desire to establish a hierarchy where he and the other pigs have special privileges and control over the other animals.
