Ever since Darwin published his theory of Evolution by Natural Selection, the idea of human evolution has been difficult for many people to accept. What is it about evolution by natural selection that many people find so unacceptable?
Leon Festinger once said, “A man with a conviction is a hard man to change. Tell him you disagree and he turns away. Show him facts or figures and he questions you sources. Appeal to logic and he fails to see you point“. This quote gives us the direction toward understanding why some people find it hard, or to some extend unacceptable when scientific facts are presented to them, in our case, evolution by natural selection. Charles Darwin published a book named „On the origin of species“ in 1859 where he introduced a scientific theory, giving an answer to the diversity of life by means of natural selection. The theory suggests that organisms adapted to the environment tend to survive and produce more offspring, while the others go extinct. It is related with Biological Essentialism, which refers to the idea that “we are how me are” because our genetic “makeup” which is not subject of change impacted by environment changes. In other word, people diminish the idea that variety of species is a result of million year’s natural selection process by discrediting the evidences such as fossils. They seek for immediate answer to the questions like, “why monkeys does not turn into a humans”? Furthermore, for some people there is a lack of fossil records to show the “whole story” for this transformation in the past which they see it as the missing link. It is precisely this reason why many people simple cannot pursue the idea that changes or variety of species happen throughout a very long period of time and cannot be visible to us, as we only can physically witness a small fraction of the earth’s long
