My undergraduate degree in psychology and counseling was a journey wrought with success and periods that has forced me to develop as a psychology student. This undergraduate course has inspired me into having a desire to further my knowledge of the subject area in the form of a masters degree; in the hope that I may gain further research skills as well as the in-depth subject knowledge needed to pursue a doctorate and in the future a psychologist role. Undergraduate studies taught me how to manage time effectively, from juggling assignments, preparing for exams, conducting, and writing up my third-year project. One of the modules I found most interesting at level 5; psychopathology and health, this module encouraged me to consider what is meant by the term mental health, as well as focusing on different case studies of mental health and how it can be diagnosed. This module helped me with my work experience in a care home; the knowledge gained from this module helped me to develop a more empathetic approach when dealing with people with mental health issues. The counseling part of my undergraduate degree helped me to develop a sense of self the modules were self-focused and introduced me to some of the counseling techniques. To increase my knowledge into psychological issues, I would like to apply for Psychological wellbeing practitioner jobs, using CBT interventions on low intensive issues such as anxiety and addiction. Applying for such roles will help me gain relevant work experience needed to complete my Ph.D. course in the future. Long term I see myself completing my psychological wellbeing practitioner training and working in an IAPT service for issues such as anxiety and addiction. After completing my Ph.D., I would like to work in the hospital or drug and rehabilitation services as a psychologist. Drugs and addiction are becoming a major issue especially since there is free movement of drugs such as “mamba”.
