In Wes Walker’s song titled Jordan Belfort, he says, “Sipping on Ciroc, trip 'em up with the words. I just popped a molly and I think this be my third.” Throughout, pop culture Molly is mentioned. Singers and rappers alike have written songs about about Molly. But, what is Molly? At first glance, some people might assume that references to Molly in songs are about a person. But in fact, Molly is the street name of MDMA. MDMA, which scientific name is Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, is a stimulant and psychoactive illegal drug. Now, MDMA is used in many party sevens such as music festivals or among college students. The reason people take MDMA is because of the the euphoric feelings they experience. MDMA releases extreme amounts serotonin which is the chemical hormone in the brain responsible for happiness. The extreme release of serotonin makes makes people have heightened senses. Years later, a scientist named Alexander Shulgin developed a new method of synthesizing the drug which is the method still used today. After creating the new method, Alexander Shulgin tested the drug on himself. Then, he shared the drug with psychotherapists. MDMA was medicinally used until the 1980s. Before the 1980s, MDMA was used to treat psychological conditions-traumatic events. Unfortunately, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration prohibited the drug in the 1980s, even amidst backlash from the medical community. A seminal study published in 2011 found that patients who received MDMA-assisted psychotherapy reported substantial reductions in the severity of their PTSD
