Hillary Rodham Clinton once said “Being pro-choice is trusting the individual to make the right decision for herself and her family, and not entrusting that decision to anyone wearing the authority of government in any regard.”. Abortion was legalized in the United States in 1973. This means that all women have the opportunity to receive an abortion if they decide to have one. Abortion has been the center of many conversations among our nation's leaders and many of these leaders believe that women should not be able to receive abortions. Abortions should remain legal for any woman who decides that it is their best option.

In 1955, Planned Parenthood organized a conference that included a testimony from sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, abortionist G. Lotrell Timanus, and Planned Parenthood's then-medical director, Mary Calderone. This conference sparked national discussion and debates about abortions. In the 1960’s, Pat Maginnis founded the Society for Humane Abortion. She later became one of the first people to publicly campaign for legalizing abortions. In 1962 Sherri Finkbine, an Arizona mother of four, was denied a legal abortion. She then traveled to Sweden to have the procedure. Finkbine had taken the drug thalidomide, which researchers linked to birth defects. The hospital was initially going to perform the procedure but then decided not to after Finkbine told her story to the local newspaper in hopes of bringing light to expecting mothers about the dangers of the drug. This resulted in a world wide debate about abortions. In 1969 A group of young women in Chicago starts "Jane," an underground system that helped women find safe and affordable illegal abortions. Eventually they learned to perform the procedures themselves, completing nearly 12,000 abortions between 1969 and 1973. Also during 1969, two significant court cases, People v. Belous and Doe v. Scott, which reached the Supreme Court in 1971, declared abortion laws unconstitutional. By the early 70’s, 20 states had passed abortion repeal or reform laws. Women should have as many options as possible when it comes to their pregnancies and their bodies. When we make abortions illegal, it will not stop abortions from taking place, it will simply stop safe abortions from happening. Rape victims should have the opportunity to move on from their traumatic experience, and forcing them to carry a baby, who is a result of a rape, around for 9 months is just cruel. Even if you believe that abortion is not moral, other people do not have the same beliefs as you and they may think that abortion is ok. Every person is allowed to have their own beliefs, and it is better to just agree to disagree rather than to make things worse for everyone. The simple solution to this problem is, if you do not believe in abortions, then do not have one. If you believe that having an abortion is alright, and you decide that it is the best option for you, then go ahead and have
