Human beings are truly one of the most fascinating organisms in the world. The magnitude of the wonderfully complex and beautifully sequenced events taking place inside our cells every second is astounding. I was first introduced to medicine at Young Doctors’ Summer School; this was to provide a glimpse into the fast-paced and constantly evolving world of medicine. My passion for medicine was further enhanced by studying biology. I find it particularly intriguing learning about the anatomy and physiology of the human body.

I was assigned a number of different roles that allowed me to meet and observe a wonderful variety of people with colourful personalities but who all faced health problems associated with the elderly. I was surprised at the level of frustration I felt when I could not offer help to a particular person, but instead had to standby whilst a member of staff tended to them. This frustration inspired me to pursue a career in medicine where I could be capable of helping people in need. I also undertook work experience with a child carer; this was so vastly different to working in a care home and I had to adapt to a fast paced, energising new environment.
