The University of Pennsylvania promotes this wondrous idea that students should be free to explore, and in the process innovate something amazing. Simply the thought of unrestrained inquiry titillates my expansive curiosity. Just as Magellan, Cabot, and famed explorers of the new world had been fascinated by knowledge beyond their boundaries, I am a conquistador. But rather than pursuing the riches of the Fountain of Youth, I seek the treasures of fruitful study and intellectual endeavors.
When I enrolled into University of Connecticut in 2009, I was living my life conforming to other people's goals and not my own. Life purpose and life intentions are rich and valuable. It can also be helpful in aiding us to move through the challenges life brings us. Self-discovery is an evolving process. Sometimes you have to take a detour in life.
In 2009, I began my graduate studies at Northeastern Illinois University in their biological sciences program. My decision to pursue a career related to the sciences was made after immigrating to America. It had become a dream that began with the failure of my father’s ambitions to complete graduate school. My father decided to end his education due to desperate need of money to support our family and to further my and my brother’s educations. I made it my goal to pursue a career in the sciences
I have been dedicated to my academic performance and character development to excel in my future profession. After graduating from H. Grady High School, I immediately attended the nearest community college–El Centro College. With uncertainty in selecting a profession, I enrolled in many college courses to determine the appropriate career for me. Through volunteer opportunities and personal responsibilities, I discovered my interest in the complexity of humanity and social issues. This realization confirmed journalism as the ideal academic and professional path.
My past education and experience gives me a strong foundation in pursuing my goals. As an economics student at the University of Washington, the most valuable skills I received are critical thinking and problem analysis. The economics way of thinking can help me in decision-making. Living in the Seattle area for more than three years, I experienced a multi-cultural immersion and developed my problem-solving skills at higher level than many of my peers. Also, real-world experience through my internships at Bain, HSBC, and the ACE summer school, activity in the entrepreneur association, as well as traveling abroad, have helped me pursue my career goals.
The MSE Undergraduate research option interests me because it gives me the opportunity to connect with MSE faculty, engage in meaningful hands on research, lay a foundation for further research and work opportunities, and most importantly, allows me to become more passionate about my degree. The specific aspects of research that interest me most are connecting with MSE faculty, learning how to use lab equipment, applying theoretical knowledge, and finding my passion within the broad field of Materials Science and Engineering. Firstly, I believe it is important to for me to make connections with faculty who specialize in my areas of interest. This guidance is important because it will give me exposure to my interests and because it will help me identify future research and employment
My undergraduate experience was a mixed bag. Independence was a wonderful change of pace but with that independence came the opportunity for poor decisions. Not the poor decisions that are generally affiliated with “going off to college” but rather, a more subtle variety. Most glaring amongst these was my decision to focus on course work to the exclusion of extracurricular activities, service, and teaching. The final year and a half of my undergraduate career forced me to reevaluate these decisions and started me down an introspective path that made me a better student, researcher, and person.
‘Learning is a process that begins in the cradle and ends in the grave’ I believe in these quotes which remind and motivate me to strive hard to learn more each day of my life, to expand the horizons of my knowledge with each passing moment. The constant development and improvisation of innovative technologies has led to the erosion of the older versions of technologies. I want to learn and satiate my never-ending curiosity in computers and make the best use of the latest technologies. This calls for a higher level of knowledge, capacity and expertise to research extensively.
“Set out on a quest on paths untried, Leave behind footprints in the sands of time” The above quote is indicative of my attitude towards my education and life choices that I have made and will continue to make in the future. I am drawn to anything that requires creativity and originality, which is a significant reason why writing poetry and short stories interests me. The core skills acquired from this interest are transferable and have benefited me in a whole range of situations from dealing with people, playing sport, or while making any notable decisions in my life.
NSCS could help me in some of the major issues I face in college. To start with, I'm an international student and it is difficult paying my tuition and fees. My country, Nigeria, is going through some social and economic hardships. This affects the exchange rate in the country's currency to dollars. The rate is a huge difference and I can not cope with it since it is my parents sponsoring my education.
I am a student that doesn’t want to sit in a classroom and copy notes about a subject; I am a curious individual who wants to understand subjects and their overlap in a way that is applicable to my ambitions of changing the technology field. My goal is to have an interconnected appreciation of multiple subjects through experiences that exist outside the classroom and tie my learning to the real world, all while developing my leadership skills. This is no easy feat. The Honors College at Stony Brook University is a great place to continue my progress towards this goal, because it shares these motivations. I am a great fit for this program because my existing educational values closely match those of the program, which will help both me and the program excel in our respective ambitions.
I have always been eager to understand the world and to look for universal truths. This is why I wish to study philosophy. Additionally, I would like to improve my English by experiencing the environment and talking to new people. Furthermore, I also wish to learn about the English culture as it has always been intriguing for me. For this reason, I am applying for admission for BA in Philosophy and English in the UK.
In my childhood, I was actually more interested in physics than in biology or chemistry. Probably, because it was Stephen Hawking’s book “A Short History of Time” about theoretical physics that made me decide to pursue my career in science. My interest turned to biochemistry when I watched a documentary about cancer and people dying from it, and when I saw that program, it made me think I want to do something in the future that stops that from happening. Of course, it seemed unrealistic, but I thought that one day somebody will solve this problem and if every scientist will do at least one research in this field this day will come much sooner. Nevertheless, I was good in all subjects I began learning biology and chemistry especially hard.
Being successful is what human kind dream. Being economically strong and successful is at the top of all dreams. But how economic success is defined makes difference in people’s life, what they do, what they accomplish and what they pursue. Reaching to economic success needs effort but having the capacity to cooperate to seek country’s future ambitious goals and walking toward success; especially when it comes from a credential institution is a significant point. I was born as a refugee, growing in a poor family but, hard-working and optimistic for a better future.
Education has been more of an opportunity rather than a chore. I have never viewed graduation as closing the book. I have always thought of it as an introduction, something that would shed light to the rest of the story. My lifetime goal is to become a brilliant engineer and change the way humans live through innovation. Words like devoted, committed, maybe even obsessed come to mind when people learn how I have prepared myself for my future.
