In 2009, I began my graduate studies at Northeastern Illinois University in their biological sciences program. My decision to pursue a career related to the sciences was made after immigrating to America. It had become a dream that began with the failure of my father’s ambitions to complete graduate school. My father decided to end his education due to desperate need of money to support our family and to further my and my brother’s educations. I made it my goal to pursue a career in the sciences and I knew that with my hardworking nature and dedication, graduate studies would be the best possible way of attaining it. In the graduate sciences program, my goal was to excel in Chemistry and Biology. I loved these courses in high school, but did not understand that to excel in them would mean going beyond the expectations of my high school courses. When I first enrolled in a biology course in college, I initially felt that I would not be able to meet their challenge. My inspiration to master my biology course came from my General Biology professor. I showed up to my first General Biology class prepared to take notes, but my teacher surprised us all. To prepare myself for a career in the healthcare field, I worked as a volunteer at Lutheran General Hospital. I worked with all ages during that period and noticed the differences in the health care systems of India and the United States. In America, children who came to the hospital in pain were never judged on their financial situation. Children were always provided with initial care. There was a unique bond between doctors and patients of all ages. Also, through my experience at Lutheran General Hospital, I learned the importance of organization and effective communication skills, and was exposed to the diversity of the surrounding
