In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible Abigail Williams, a young, headstrong woman , is the main villain of this story. Most people will say Abigail is the victim but the only thing she is a victim of is a broken heart. The reasons of her being the fellon are she started the witch hoax and tried to rid of Goody Proctor. Abigail commenced the whole witch hoax in order to save herself from getting into trouble for ‘dancing’ in the woods.
During the time of the witch trials, many people were accused of being a witch or doing witchcraft and many of these accusations were fueled by past grudges. In The Crucible, Abigail has a grudge against Elizabeth, who is married to John Proctor, because she is jealous that Elizabeth is with him and Abigail loves John. Abigail is deeply in love with John that she resents Elizabeth for being his wife. Abigail despises Elizabeth that Betty confirmed saying, “You did, you did!
In The Crucible, I believe that Abigail could have ended the mass hysteria in Salem by being honest and not having an affair at an age that you're still young, Abigail was wrong for just accusing anyone in her way to get them hanged which she could’ve stopped the hysteria just by owning up to her problems. Abigail never meant to get john proctor to hanged after all abigail just wanted proctor all to her self. Abigail was upset because she viewed Elizabeth as an inconvenience just because she is preventing Abigail from being with Proctor. “ Did you come to see me John I almost forgot how strong you are” To this moment Abigail was with Procter but he denied that he didn't want anything to do with her.
Abigail was the one that started all of this because she was accused of witchery but instead of accepting the fact, she ends up accusing other people of witchcraft. She blackmailed the girls to not say a word or they will die. She wanted all of them to pretend to be summoned by the demon so they can accuse other people of witchery. In the book on page 19, “Let either of you breathe a word, or edge of a word. About the other things, and i will come to you in the black of some terrible nights and i will bring a pointy reckoning that will shatter you”.
The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, focuses on the town of Salem, Massachusetts, during the deplorable witch trials revolving around the 1600's. Within these trials, there were multiple accusations that were made about who was really involved in the witch trials, many of the characters who were falsely and baselessly accused were innocent. The falsification that were created by the main character of The Crucible, Abigail Williams were only for her own benefit to protect herself from being accused as one of the “witches” or had she had been there in the forest the night there was witchcraft . For example, in (Act 1.Scene 3)ABIGAIL: She sends her spirit on me in church; she makes me laugh at prayer! ABIGAIL:
Abigail is to be blamed a lot, because she seduced John Proctor even though he had a wife. Elizabeth found out about the affair and Elizabeth told Abigail not to mess with her husband or she will regret it. Abigail confesses to withcraft saying that she gave her soul to the devil. She convinced other girls to cast spells with Tituba. She carefully planned the way she accused people in the community of withcraft , so she could be credible when she accused Elizabeth.
Abigail A 17 year old girl who portrays herself to be sweet and kind, but is truly not what everything thinks she is. Abigail at one time worked in Proctor’s home. She was dismissed from Proctor’s home because Elizabeth found out what was going on. Abigail started to point fingers at people and telling lies to get back at Proctor. Abigail’s pay back to him affects everyone.
Who Is To Blame? Arthur Miller’s The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem witch trials. Arthur Miller shows how Abigail was the main cause of the all the killing of innocent people of Salem. Her flaws was that she was quick to temper, she was jealous of Elizabeth, and that’s she lust for John Proctor.
Abigail Williams was a very intense character in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, but according to historical documents, she may be a bit more of a nuisance than anticipated from the book. The age, things she did, and who she “loved” is all different. Some things were the same, but there have been a lot of differences. The Crucible portrayed Abigail Williams as a seventeen year old girl who was a servant for the Proctors.
I think Abigail is to blame for the hysteria at the end of Act 1, because she accuses other people, lies, and tries to get what she wants. First, when Abigail says, “If they be questioning us tell them we danced- I told him as much already.”(18). Abigail is telling the other girls to lie to Reverend Parris about what happened in the woods that night he saw them. Fear is used to scare the girls into lying even though what they did was wrong, Abigail doesn’t want to lose the power of controlling and “witchcraft”. Secondly, Abigail is speaking to John Proctor saying, “Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be-.”(24).
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the people of Salem rely heavily on their reputations, which in the face of witchcraft, leads to false accusations and hysteria. Abigail showed her fear of a blackened reputation through her hasty accusations when being accused herself. In The Crucible when Abigail is trapped in a web of her own lies, she is accused of calling the Devil. With all eyes on her, and a need to save her reputation, she quickly replies, “I never called him!
One of the most powerful human emotions is desire. Everyone is constantly trying to fulfill their own desires. A desire or passion may be so strong it can conflict with morality. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams, is driven to go against her moral duty and pursue John Proctor. She will stop at nothing to see her plan through.
The Crucible “Be careful not to mistake insecurity and inadequacy for humility! Humility has nothing to do with the insecure and inadequate.” In today’s society people can be insecure about anything especially when it comes to relationships, societal expectations, or just the way we perceive ourselves compared to others. Elizabeth Proctor started to blame herself and become insecure over her husbands morbid act of Infidelity, and Abigail Williams became insecure over John Proctor choosing his wife Elizabeth rather than her. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, there was many signs of so called “witchcraft” which had led to many false accusations of this crime that caused many unnecassary hangings of numerous people.
A tragic time in American history was the Salem witch trials of 1962, which took place in Salem, Massachusetts. Many innocent people were wrongfully convicted of witchcraft at this time and executed as a result. Abigail Williams, a young lady who played a crucial role in the events in Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible," was one of the main perpetrators of these false allegations. Abigail is shown in "The Crucible" as a manipulative and bitter character who will do anything to further her agenda. She is driven by jealousy and a desire for revenge against those who have wronged her.
My first experience associated with an AA meeting was a little nerve-racking. As I walked into the building and found my seat, I had an unusual amount of anxiety. Sitting there alone, I started to analyze the anxieties and fear someone with an addiction might be feeling when walking into the room for the first time. The meeting began on time and started with a moment of silence which was followed by the serenity prayer. A woman sitting in front of me was asked to read Chapter 5, “How It Works,” from The Big Book.
