Self-sacrifice can be defined as an individual gives up his own interest for satisfying the needs of others. When an individual faces a compelling circumstance, he steps on others to help himself to gain prestige and position for himself while leaving those stepped on in the dust. An individual who benefits from other’s sacrifice is more willing to embrace the idea of sacrificing others. It may not cause worry or guilt immediately. However, the guilty feeling of sacrificing others keeps an individual awakes at night and struggles to redeem himself.

While some argue that it is a moral obligation to help others in need, others believe it is not always the individual's responsibility. After analyzing “Night”, "First They Came For the Communists”, "The Perils of Indifference”, and a couple of others' thoughts, it is evident that individuals have a moral obligation to help others who are in danger, regardless of their own personal circumstances. Whether it is a matter of life or death, our human nature compels us to act compassionately and offer assistance.

They encountered a man on the road that had been struck by lightning and was also suffering from starvation. The boy wanted to turn back and help the wounded stranger, but the man had to explain to the boy that they did not have enough of anything to share with him (McCarthy 49-52). They barely had enough to take care of themselves, and if they gave away anything that they had, they would be more likely to starve. It was a decision between their own lives and others’. There was also another occasion where the man and boy were on the beach and were robbed of most of their belongings (McCarthy).

As an egoist every action made is based on the happiness and best interest in oneself, not others. A person, human-being, abortion, and infanticide mean nothing. None of this is relevant unless it effects oneself in some way. They don't care what anyone else thinks or believes. Abortion and infanticide are moral if it’s what’s going to make them happy and help with their own interest.
