In the book The Help, Stockett uses pathos to show people’s emotions and their different feelings throughout the book. Skeeter’s interviews cause meekness and fear in the maids because if they get caught, their punishment will end up much worse because of the color of their skin. As shown in the book fear shows pathos as well as anger, sadness, and love. In the book, the maids give interviews for Skeeter because Skeeter believes that she can put together these stories from the maids and help change some of the segregation laws. Gretchen, a maid who shows ruthlessness towards Skeeter, also chooses to show confrontation when she confronts and berates Skeeter and Aibileen.

It is a story about how three women team up to form an alliance and secretively work on a writing project that would be shunned otherwise. The film portrayed the time when segregation existed between the whites and the blacks to be specific in the early 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi. The film began with a flash-forward scene where Aibileen a black domestic maid is being interviewed, how it feels to work for a white family?
Poverty in Just Mercy “The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, and the accused” (Stevenson 18). Thousands of people live in poverty and struggle every day with many of their basic needs. They struggle with being able to buy food, shelter, clothing, and access to medical care. People in poverty don’t have access to good legal support because they simply can’t afford it.
In Rachel Remen’s article Helping vs. Serving she provides her stance on the distinction between helping and serving. Remen feels that, though the two words are often used interchangeably, ‘serving’ is the most appropriate term to use as it implies equality that ‘helping’ does not. While the author acknowledges that both terms refer to the act of assisting others, Remen offers readers a new, more in depth perspective. Essentially, Remen likens helping to having pity on an individual, whereas serving is an act of selflessness. In this selflessness, servers do not focus on what an individual is lacking that they can provide, but rather creating wholeness in humanity.
Sexism in The Help Sexism was a normal part of life in the 1960’s. The Help, which takes place during that time period, presents evidence of this throughout the novel. Written by Kathryn Stockett, it features primarily female characters, which helps to illustrate this point. Many of the characters experience sexism in some way, but Skeeter and Celia were two of the most affected by it. Sexist stereotypes affect both of them, but Skeeter deals with sexism from greater external forces, while Celia places most of them on herself.
Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.
The four famously known theorists are Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Karl Marx. Each studied and viewed social behavior in a way they believed was the way it should be viewed; hence, they came up with different theories that categorizes society in many different aspects. Emile Durkheim was a father of sociologist who was famous for his views on the structure of society and its functions. His work was majored on how traditional and modern societies evolved and operate. Durkheim's theories were based on the concept of social facts.
The altruistic behaviour of healthcare practitioners may include consistent work or the providence of informal medical advice beyond the boundaries of contracted hours along with the general willingness to move beyond the additional miles in professional activities. There is sufficient evidence that many healthcare practitioners perform their duties beyond their contracted hours but there is a declining trend evident related to the altruism in medicine. This can be expressed within the unwillingness of anaesthetist for accepting a final case on the list due to the time of operation to be run beyond the contracted session limit. Characteristics of Effective Helper In 1952, Eysenck examined 24 uncontrolled studies that looked at the effectiveness of counseling and Psychotherapy and found that “roughly two-thirds of a group of neurotic patients will recover or improve to a marked extent within about two years of the onset of their illness, whether they are treated by means of psychotherapy or not [Italics added]”. Although found to have serious methodological flaws, Eysenck’s research did lead to debate concerning the effectiveness of counseling and resulted in hundreds of studies that came to some very different conclusions: It is a safe conclusion that as a general class of healing practices, psychotherapy is remarkably effective.
As human services majors, we are all helpers in some way. Whether we are teachers, social workers or aids. We all do something similar. We help others in some way to make their lives better. Three characteristics of effective helpers that I believe is most important are openness and willingness to change, sense of identity, authenticity and honesty and acceptance of one's power.
