American Exceptionalism leads other countries to think that Americans are narrow-minded. American Exceptionalism is the belief that the U.S. follows a different from the laws or norms that govern other countries. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines narrow-minded as lacking in tolerance or breadth of vision. After surveying a conglomeration of people from different countries, Daily Mail concluded that America/ns are viewed a couple of different ways. Addis Ababa from Ethiopia said Ethiopians think that America is filled with gold. In the past, immigrants viewed America as the land of opportunity because “it presents them with life options they might not have had in their country.” Although this is a common belief, some people, like a woman from Australia, think that Americans are naive about the world. We have started to get away from solely teaching U.S. history because it mainly presents one point of view on the same time period/event, which doesn’t provide students with the ability to think for themselves or come to their own conclusions about the event. Other countries teach about all history. Why are we only teaching our history? Is it because we think that we are the best country, which means our students don’t need to know any world history? “A 2014 report by the National Assessment of Educational Progress showed that an abysmal 18 percent of American high school kids were proficient in US history.” Lots of students don’t know a great deal about US history even though they have been learning about it for several years; schools commonly start teaching U.S. history very early but majority of students only know certain events and details.
