I can tell To Kill A Mockingbird takes place during the 1930’s because of the allusions made in it. In the book, they also use words that we do not normally use in our average daily vocabulary; Some examples would be on page 36 when they use words such as “fer”, “reckon”, and “ain’t”. Back in the twentieth century, they used multiple words that we do not use as much nowadays. Furthermore, I can tell the book takes place during the 1930’s is because of an allusion made on page 46 when Jem refers to Indian-heads. Indian-heads were pennies before the Lincoln penny came about.
Finny wore a pink shirt and used the Devon School tie as his belt to the traditional term tea for the Upper Middle class. Mrs. Patch-Withers noticed and Finny quickly came up with a convincing story to possibly get himself out of trouble. Gene thinks Finny will be busted and reacts by saying, “I could feel myself becoming unexpectedly excited at that” (Knowles 12). This quote shows the beginning of the envy Gene feels toward Finny. Gene is somewhat looking forward to the possibility of Finny getting in trouble for the first time.
If your civil rights were taken away, would you fight to protect your rights or watch and let your civil rights drift away? Marcus, a main character in the book Little Brother, was near the bay bridge in San Francisco when it was blown up by terrorists. He was blamed for it by the DHS (Department of Homeland Security). Due to the bombing, the city was put under heavy watch by the DHS and everyone was treated as a potential terrorist, especially Marcus. Throughout the book, Marcus fought against the DHS for the rights to privacy of himself and the civilians of San Francisco.
“Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?” This quote was spoken on August 22, 1939 by Adolf Hitler over 20 years after the Armenian Genocide took place. Adolf Hitler then went on to plan and lead one of the biggest and most widespread human massacres of all time, The Holocaust. Adolf Hitler believed that no one would notice the Holocaust because no one had taken much interest in the Armenian Genocide. The historical fiction book Forgotten Fire, by Adam Bagdasarian, tells the story of a boy named Vahan Kenderian who lived through the Armenian Genocide.
The story Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury has many meaningful quotes and aphorisms. During the story a chacater says, "You can't build a house without nails and wood. If you don't want a house built, hide the nails and wood. If you don't want a man unhappy politically, don't give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one." (Bradbury 58).
Real Life Quote Have you ever wondered what it was like to live next a person who people believed to be scary and could kill you? Well, in the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, the narrator, does. The book is based on her brother Jem breaking his elbow and how it happened told in a long flashback series. From reading the book a person could tell that Lee is a very considerant person, pertaining to this quote, “You never really understand a person until you consider his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”
In life no matter what you do in life there will always be consequences to your actions. In “Heart of a Champions” by Carl Deuker, Seth and Jimmy the main characters go through some things in the book. When Jimmy starts hanging out with his “Cool friends” he starts changing for the worse but later in the book his actions have consequences. In “Heart of the Champion” Deuker shows that there will always be consequences to your actions. Deuker uses a 1st person narrator to show why Seth is angry at Jimmy.
“I felt no pity for him. In fact I was pleased with what was happening to him” (Wiesel 52). Elie Wiesel’s character became a brute, because he witnessed children being killed, death everywhere and his loss of faith. Wiesel watched people get hung with no phase of tears. Wiesel writes in his book after the war, “watched others hangings.”
In the passage, The Works And Days by the ancient Greek poet Hesiod, He talks about winter as if winter were to be a person. “ Many solid fir trees along the slope of the mountain his force bends against the prospering earth, and all the innumerable forest is loud with him.” the ancient Greek poet Hesiod is using “his” to describe the wind. In the passage the wind has affected aspects of the natural world but he does not cover everything. “But not even Boreas’ force can blow through a sheepskin to any degree, for the thick flee holds him out.”
Who is Abigail Williams and what is this static of characters goal? The Crucible written by Arthur Miller is it about the witch trials. in the first and second at the girls are caught dancing in the forest and are accused of being witches and in the second act, The Witch Trials begin in the accusations start. Abigail Williams is a very static character who is motivated by her lust and jealousy causing the Witch Hunt with her smart lies and devious ways. this can be shown through various quotes found in The Crucible written by Arthur Miller.
Abigail Williams The Crucible by Arthur Miller is about the suspicion of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts. The play started with Betty Parris being ill. Betty Parris was the daughter of Rev. Parris, who was Salem’s town minister and only cared about his reputation. Suspicions were circulating in the town that Betty was involved with witchcraft. They sent out a special doctor, Rev. Hale, who knew all about witchcraft to see if Betty was truly involved with witchcraft.
In the book Old School by Tobias Wolff there are examples of where Tobias is a not so innocent boy. He is often times a trouble-maker and very rowdy. However, there is a passage in the book the hints at otherwise. Deep down Tobias is more innocent than his antics lead on.
The main character Odysseus is often portrayed as an epic hero. An epic hero is typically found to be a larger-than-life figure who goes on a journey and faces many challenges along the way, ultimately returning home as a changed and better person. One example of Odysseus displaying the characteristics of an epic hero is when he faces the Cyclops Polyphemus. "But resourceful Odysseus, his mind spinning with plans, replied with guile: 'My name is Nobody: mother, father, friends, everyone calls me Nobody'"
While creating my rhetorical analysis paper I used all of my typical writing processes. I began this assignment by selecting a commercial that I thought would be the most appealing in the superbowl. After selecting my commercial I did some research at the library using EBSCOhost. I then created an outline on what my paper would be about and pieced all of its parts together. In the future I will try to recieve help earlier on because at first I struggled to understand what the purpose of the paper was.
