Audrey Lee Mrs. VanDerhoef Honors English I 28 February 2022 The ending of Romeo and Juliet was a result of bad luck and bad timing. In the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare sets the fate of the two lovers from the start: star crossed lovers. For context, “star crossed lovers” is a phrase describing two lovers whose relationship is doomed to end in a tragedy. This is shown at the end of the play, where little actions lead to disastrous events in a matter of bad luck and timing. It all started when the letter Friar Lawrence had sent to Romeo was delayed because of the pandemic quarantine by the deliverer, resulting in Romeo not being able to receive it. The timing of events just proves the bad luck that they had, since it could have all been prevented if Romeo got the letter a little earlier. Later on, there proves to be short moments of hope where the two lovers could be happy together, but unfortunately, bad luck and timing plays in as well. When Romeo arrives at the Capulet Monument, he encounters Paris, who was the groom of Juliet. Paris, who sees Romeo’s grief as mockery, misunderstands the situation and begins a duel with him, which eventually results in the prince’s death. This unfortunate timing of the two “proclaimed lovers” of Juliet encountering each other has readers knowing that there would have been no good outcome to begin with. Of course, the two just had to be there at the same time weeping for Juliet. If that wasn’t enough for bad timing, Juliet wakes up right after Romeo kills himself with the poison he bought, with Friar Lawrence dissing her concerns and telling her to run away. If Romeo only continued weeping for a minute more, he would've realized that Juliet wasn’t actually dead when she woke up. This is another ironic situation of bad timing in Romeo
