Nobody can choose their physical appearance but that doesn’t make anyone less beautiful. People grow up thinking that being beautiful is how you look on the outside, but anyone can be truly beautiful. In this specific novel Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, the citizens are taught from a young age that you are never really beautiful until you get the perfect surgery at age 16. Also, the government tries to control the way people think about their appearance, but the people find the truth about beauty and rebel against the absurd rules. But true beauty comes from within, and not the outer appearance.

This shows that the government is trying to engrave false claims about beauty and people's appearance into children's minds. The text states “You can’t change it by wishing, or by telling yourself that you’re pretty. That’s why they invented the operation.” pg 79 It appears that the government is trying to teach them young so they don’t have any revealing questions when they're older. Lastly, the government is trying to cover up the truth about natural beauty. They are trying to alter the natural reaction children have about beauty. The government thinks that if they control the way people think beauty is they won't question why they have to do the operation. The excerpt from the text says “It’s not programming, its just natural reaction. And more important than that, it’s fair.” Pg 79 It occurs that the government thinks by altering what the true meaning of beauty is that they could control the way people think about certain situations. They grow up thinking that if they are physically beautiful they will get anything and everything they want, and if your ugly they don’t get anything special and nobody will like
