In the novel The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald two characters by the name of Tom and Daisy Buchanan are a married couple living in West Egg surrounded by money that they inherited from their families. The Buchanan's live a live full of money, parties and carelessness. Because of their wealth Tom and Daisy never have to do anything for themselves, everything is done for them. When Nick arrives in New York he quickly realizes that Tom and Daisy are careless people. Nick says, “They are careless people, ….. they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made” (179). Myrtle was hit by a car that was believed to be driven by Jay Gatsby but instead was being operated by Daisy. After the accident Nick and Gatsby see Tom and Daisy in the window talking at their kitchen table, “... Daisy and Tom were sitting opposite each other at the kitchen table, with a plate of cold fried chicken between them and two bottles of ale. He was talking intently across the table at her.....anybody would have said that they were conspiring together” (PAGE NUMBER) Gatsby first arrives at their house to make sure Tom does not harm Daisy after he found out Daisy killed Myrtle. Although when they see them talking they soon realize that Tom is not mad, he is consoling Daisy as the two think of ways to get themselves out of the mess they have mad. In the book it is clear that Tom and Daisy have a different kind of relationship, even though they both find themselves cheating on one another they will always end up together because Tom and Daisy understand each other. They are both careless people who will sacrifice other people's lives in order to save their own. In fact Tom visits the scene and talks to Mr. Wilson (Myrtle’s husband) and explains to him very thoroughly that it was neither Daisy nor him that was driving the car that killed Myrtle, it was Jay Gatsby. “He broke off defiantly. "What if I did tell him? That fellow had it coming to him. As a result of Tom telling Mr. Wilson that Gatsby killed Myrtle, Gatsby’s was later killed by Mr. Wilson. “He threw dust into your eyes just like he did in Daisy's, but he was a tough one. He ran over Myrtle like you'd run over a dog and never even stopped his car." (PAGE NUMBER) Tom tells nick that Gatsby had it coming to him, and he deserves to take the blame for the murder of Myrtle. Tom and Daisy’s careless not only affects them but the people around them even leading to the death of Daisy’s good friend and ex lover Jay
