There are many controversies that affect society today. Controversy can initiate arguments, destroy families, and cause political strife. Some of the major controversies affecting America today are racism, abortion, as well as religious freedom. In this day and age, people are allowed to have their own opinions and will defend them in a controversial conversation. This shows how college athletes have no say and the board does not value them highly enough for them to make a source of income. Like whenever they come out of high school and are widely known for being a top-level athlete, they need to gain some source of income. In this article titled “Paying College athletes,” It discusses “If college players earned about 50% of their teams’ revenues as the NFL and NBA players do, the average football player’s yearly salary would be $360,000 and the average basketball player’s yearly salary would be $500,000” ("Paying College Athletes”). This explains how much of a benefit these college athletes can gain but they are not being supported by the higher. Therefore leading to poverty through college, especially because some come from low-income backgrounds. This also illustrates how valuable athletes are. They have worked their tails off getting to this stage in their sport, and they can not even gain a source of income. That is the least of many things that should start being provided to them. College athletes are risking their bodies and they do not gain any source of income. Also, kneeling during the national anthem and protesting against it to stand for what is right is now being considered disrespectful even though it is not. Police officers wearing body cameras should be the new normal for the safety and protection of citizens. These are all examples of controversies that are commonly debated in society today.
