The Epitome of Corrupt Government Oppression is the essential tool in every tyrant’s belt from which he rules. To look the other way, and pretend that nothing happened, leads to power-hungry pigs taking advantage of the surrounding animals. Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, reviews the lives of regular farm animals that decide to overthrow their neglectful and abusive caretaker, Farmer Jones. As the animals embrace the revolution, they establish their own “government”, which is governed by pigs, prominently Napoleon. Limiting the animals’ opportunities early on to gain intelligence and education becomes the key for the pigs to maintain their position of power. The pigs teach themselves to read and write from a children’s book but destroy it before the other animals could have the same chance. This is essential because if the other animals had the ability to learn like the pigs did, the pigs would not have been able to rule in a tyrannical way like they did. Having the advantage of being the only ones that are literate, solidifies the pigs’ status as the elite. Because of this, the pigs used their education and knowledge to do as they wish without any obstacles. “The pigs did not actually work, but directed and supervised the others. With their superior knowledge it was natural that they should assume the leadership”(27). Some animals, like Benjamin, were capable of reasoning, but did little or nothing to oppose Napoleon. Propaganda was heavily used by the pigs to make the "inferior" animals worship Napoleon and drive the them to work. The song “Beasts of England” is used to build up patriotism for the rebellion but is banned and replaced with a song that worships Napoleon. The pigs also rely on persuasion to keep the animal from questioning them.
