Cultural Awareness Being that America is a huge melting pot for a number of different cultures, establishing a sense of cultural awareness is even more important now, than it has been in past years. America is one of the most diverse countries overall. Being culturally aware will allow for an individual to be sensitive to the needs and requirements to respect individuals that may be of a different race, culture, or religion. In order to be culturally aware you must first know what culture is defined as. During World War I Iraq was invaded by the British, what is considered Iraq’s first War and referred to as the Mesopotamia Campaign. “This campaign in World War I represented an effort by the British to safeguard both the route to India and the newly discovered oil fields of Persia.” (Lenman & Marsden, 2005) Following a series of battles the British were able to occupy Baghdad. In later years, around 1922 RAF Iraq Command was developed and took over command of all the British troops. May 1941, during World War II, the Anglo-Iraqi war took place. This war was the British army against the rebels, with a British win. In 1967 the Arab-Israeli War took place and the Iraqi Army sent troops. Iraqi army also partook in other wars which included the October against Israel in 1973, the Iran-Iraq war in 1980 as well as the Gulf war. During the Gulf War the United States did bomb Iraq, ultimately freeing Kuwait. Finally the most recent war includes the Iraq war, which initially began in …show more content…

Baghdad is the Capital of Iraq, and where much of the war with the United States took place. Also, Babylon, many are familiar with as well, it is an Ancient city that was once a kingdom during the Mesopotamia era. There are many structures that are honored in Iraq as well that include a number of Mosque. Some dating back as far as the year 635, such as the Imam Ali Mosque located in Basra. Because of past wars, Iraq is now less capable of being a threat to other states. Even though they may not be looked as a threat, they are very capable of counterinsurgency. “Iraq has the most capable counterinsurgency force in the Middle East and Central Asia, but its military still has a long way to go to defend the Iraqi people, a spokesman for U.S. Forces Iraq, said here today.” (Garamone, 2011) There are a number of organizations within Iraq to include woman organizations such as the General Federation of Iraqi Women, Iraqi Women’s League, and Republican Women’s Organization. There are also a few different militaries such as the Islamic Army in Iraq, Mukhtar Army, and Turkmen Brigades. In Iraq, men are of higher rank and appear to be valued far more than women. For example, often times a man will not extend his hand for shaking to a woman, unless a woman who is not of the same culture and she extends it
