Between the twentieth and twenty-first century, groups in countries around the world organized movements to gain independence and freedom in their nation. Decolonization in Asia and Africa is a good example of the movement in which the people demanded for their freedom. In Algeria, the nation fought against an imperialist nation, France, and gained their independence. In Syria, nations are fighting to oust the president Bashar al-Assad to stop his regime. During their fight, Algeria and Syria suffered a civil war and war crimes because the government refuses to give up their power in the region. This shows that the events in the Middle East are similar to the theme of decolonization in Africa because Syria and Algeria experienced similar events such as a government that fought to stay in control, civil war, and war crimes.

Algeria fought against the government similar to Syria. Syria fought for the release of President Bashar al-Assad’s government while the Algerians rebelled against the French rule in the region. In Syria, the people split into two groups, one that supports Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the other who refuses to accept al-Assad’s government. This caused a civil war to emerge in the country.
