Nadia Hunter 1/23/23 English 10 Mr. Luttermoser Duality is shown in the book “A Tale Of Two Cities” on multiple occasions. Duality can be shown through situations, two different characters, or even through one person. Dickens shows duality in his book consistently. One example I found to show this is the duality between Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton. Another example I found is the connection between Lucie Manette and Madame Defarge. The last example I found is the duality within Sydney Carton himself. To begin, the duality between Charles and Sydney begins with their physical appearance. Darnay and Carton look so similar that they once got confused at a trial initially for Sydney Carton. When we look ahead in the book we see that theme come back when Sydney sacrifices himself for Charles. Sydney knows that they look similar so he takes Darnay's place in death. Their personalities are completely different, Carton was always a drunkard who disliked himself and was not very highly thought of. On the other hand, Darnay, A very well off man who is well respected. Dickens purposefully uses their similar looks and different actions to force the reader to dive deeper into the overall meaning of the story. …show more content…

Lucie has consistently been related to light throughout the book, while Defarge is the shadows. We can infer that light represents the good in a person, while shadow represents the bad or darkness in a person. We also see through this book that Lucie is driven by love and affection, and Defarge is driven by revenge and hate. Although they both are driven to do what is right, their opinions on what is right differ completely. The interactions between Lucie and Defarge show their dual nature. Although, towards the end of the book Lucie seemed to have lost her spark and ended up becoming more like Defarge than the reader would have ever
