Do you know the world where it doesn’t exist? It is ‘Utopia.’ Utopia is an ideal world where people dream to live. Unfortunately, utopia couldn’t be existed in our lives. Also, the opposite of utopia doesn’t exist. It is ‘Dystopia.’ Dystopia is a dark world which has the most negative things. A literary work about dystopia sharply criticize of reality. 1984 is one of the most popular book about dystopia. The author of 1984 is George Orwell and he wrote 1984 to criticize ‘Stalin Era.’ 1984’s background is Oceania. Oceania’s leaders make the party to dominate and monitor people. A main character, Winston Smith works at record department as a fixing newspaper. To say specifically, he fixes a newspaper which the party wants. Their rules are very cruel. The party has 4 departments ‘Ministry of Peace,’ ‘Ministry of Love,’ ‘Ministry of Plenty’ and ‘Ministry of Truth.’ Their slogan is ‘War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength.’ They control most of people’s life and telescreen which transmit sound and image is installed everywhere, even in house. They always watch with telescreens, microphones, helicopters and police officers. Also, they make ‘Newspeak’ to replace ‘Oldspeak.’ They tried to make words simple and erasing them for removing ‘thought crime.’ The party control people’s lives and even their thoughts. When Smith is caught, the party erase all of his traces that he was alive and treat Smith doesn’t exist. After this Smith is not executed, he has to suffer from torturing.
