The author, Saki, uses foreshadowing to warn the reader about an event or obstacle coming up in the story. In the text, it says a man stood in the winter night watching and listening as though he waited for some “beast of the woods”. There were animals in the forest who would usually be asleep at the time but were up and running around. From the animals’ movement, you can infer that something dangerous was in the woods. Later on, in the text, we found out that the fatal creatures were a pack of wolves. As a result of the use of foreshadowing, the reader can expect something to happen.
In the beginning of the story, there is a man vs. man conflict when the two men are battling
