Ever wonder why certain characters seek freedom away from something or someone? The novel that will be used as an example is Washington Black by Esi Edugyan. The book is about a kid that was born into slavery whose name is Washington or Wash. His main goal in the book is to get away from the plantation he was born and forced to work at. Big Kit, Wash and Titch are the people that will be used as an argument as to why certain people seek out freedom. Big Kit was someone that sought out freedom her whole life, but could never find it until she sadly passed away. She sought out freedom by waiting for the right moment to run away from the plantation so she could be free and go wherever she wanted to. She believed that when she died she was reborn in her homeland free. Big Kit says to Wash “If you dead, you wake up again in your homeland. You wake up free.” (Edugyan 9). What happened in this quote is that Wash was asking Big kit what being free was like, and she was telling him that he can do whatever he wanted when he was free. The quote proves that she was seeking out freedom by saying that “you go wherever it is you want” (Edugyan 9). Big Kit wants to know what being free feels like because she has never known what it feels like to be able to choose what you want. The quote is important because it proves that she was seeking out freedom her whole life by doing what the masters ask for because if she were to try to run away they would catch her and put her in a cage, and the only other way to become free she thinks is that you die naturally.
