Fast food chains are a huge contribution to the obesity epidemic not only in America but in other countries as well. Schlosser just like many health reporters depicts the successful but unhealthy ways fast food leader, McDonalds has been able in keeping its customers wanting more. Schlosser emphasizes the additional additives in key foods such as French Fries that appeal to the consumers which is the seven different types of cooking oil, (20,Schlosser.) Schlosser uses the french fries as an example to show that in our everyday foods, they are additional additives such as “natural” or “artificial” ingredients. Although it is the goal for producers to provide tasteful foods to the consumers, these man-made additives diminish the power of complete organic and naturally grown foods. The additives remove the spiritual connection between food and the consumer which is the most significant factor in deriving flavor as Masanobu Fukuoka explains in “Living by Bread Alone”. I see Schlosser’s view as one that describes the importance of the entire industry. I agree with him that the industry does contribute a lot to the American culture but it does the large and over reliance of these additives out weigh the contribution to American cuisines. American food has lost it’s food identity in that through the use of additives in its food. We have lost our connection to the actual food and replaced it with man-made substances and fragrances. This has become a chain reaction with different products in the market and it will only continue because the public demands these processed foods. These processed foods not only have “better” flavor but they are a cheaper alternative. The American people have lost the actual value to the actual taste of something because instead of eating something with actual strawberries for instance, the strawberry flavor is created in a factory in New Jersey much cheaper than using actual
