The Hate U Give: One of the most crucial things a person can have while speaking up is friendship and support. The novel The Hate U Give showcases true friendship and how speaking up can bring us together and sometimes drive others apart. This essay goes through what true allyship should and shouldn’t be like going through 3 different types; Performative allyship, Intersectional allyship between minorities, and allyship between lovers. After Maya sees Starr speak up/confront Hailey about why she unfollowed her Tumblr, Maya gains the courage to open up to Starr about the real reason why, how Hailey has done something similar to her before, and how they should stick together and not let Hailey or anyone else get away with ignorance and racism. After Starr's continuous questioning, Hailey answers, “You really wanna know why I unfollowed you, Starr? Because I don’t know who the hell you are anymore”. And storms off, leaving Maya and Starr alone. Maya takes this as a chance to tell Starr why Hailey actually unfollowed her. “That’s not why she unfollowed you. She said she didn’t wanna see that shit on her dashboard, all the “black stuff”.” She then explains how Hailey has made racial remarks about her, such as asking whether her family had eaten a cat for Thanksgiving since they are Chinese. Because of their shared experiences with Hailey, they form a "Minority Alliance" together promising each other to not let Hailey get away with her racist remarks. Maya realizes the importance of having a supportive friend like Starr who listens and stands up for what is right, and she feels inspired to speak out against injustice. This experience strengthens not only their bond but also Maya, as later on in the novel she stands up for Starr to Hailey not letting her get away with another offensive comment
