At the beginning of the story, Marjane is very careful with what she wears and acts like in public. Her family is very modern and doesn’t believe that the veil should be mandatory. “I really didn’t know what to think about the veil. Deep down I was very religious but as a family we were very modern and avant-garde. (Satrapi, 6)” The only reason she has to wear the veil is because the government demands it. She could be killed for not wearing the veil. A good example of this is Marjane’s mother. One night she was out without her veil and some fundamentalist men began to insult her. “They insulted me.
