In this interactive oral discussion, my class analyze Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. We discussed a variety of subject matters from the time period the graphic novel took place in to topics such as the original language of the novel. This interactive oral allowed me to see how differently Persepolis could be interpreted. Even though I might not agree with everything that was said, everyone explained themselves and allowed me to see their point of view. This interactive oral affected me by allowing me to see the deeper meaning or the allegory of the entire work that is Persepolis.
I would like to begin with the parts of the discussion that I don’t necessarily agree with. Mrs. Miller asked the question, “Do you think that the novel was fully nonfictional?”. A classmate of mine named Morgan said it could not because Marjane, the writer of Persepolis, was too young when at the time of the revolution occurred to be able to remember everything without adding to it. Which to a certain extent I agree with because childhood memories aren’t always reliable. However, she used the parts in the story where Marji has conversations with God comfortably as what could be fictional in the novel. This is when I disagreed because there are many religious people that I know and I feel every religious person sees God as their companion and their comforter so how she spoke to him in the novel isn’t something that would not happen.
