Examples Of Lust In The Crucible

Love and lust are two words that are always thrown together with different meanings. What are those differences? In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, an example of love and lust is displayed. In the Crucible, a few girls were found partaking in activities that are known as sinful in their culture. As a result, witchcraft was believed to be responsible for their sinful acts. Throughout the play, characters John Proctor, Elizabeth, and Abigail experience a situation in which love and lust take part in. Love and lust are both strong human emotions that affect people mentally and physically, albeit in different ways. Lust being a more sexual attraction and attachment rather than a genuine emotion and often leads to guilt. In most occasions they are typically mixed with one another and both affect a person at once which is demonstrated

Love is a real genuine emotion and is built on a true foundation. “Partners build their love based on faithfulness, loyalty, confidence” (“Love vs Lust - Difference and Comparison”). Over the course of time those qualities they built start losing meaning leaving the person to feel obligated to need more, causing them to lust. Elizabeth and John built their relationship on all of the qualities that make up a beautiful relationship. John started to lose the qualities that kept him focused on his wife, Abigial distracted him and made him feel as if he gained the qualities when in reality he didn’t. Instead, The result was worse than he intended. John realizes that the love he has for Elizabeth are fundamental and can’t get rid of them because Elizabeth is perfect, and that is why he married her in the first place. John feels lost and torn because he knows at heart that he loves Elizabeth but lusts for Abigail.
