Control or influence ( a person or situation) cleverly, unfairly, or unscrupulously. -The Merriam-Webster Dictionary Manipulate most commonly means to control or influence a person or situation in an unfair and clever manner. However in George Orwell's novel Animal Farm it portrays a more deep and selfish meaning. As Napoleon manipulates the others, he’s not only taking away their power, but stripping them of their dignity without them even knowing until it's too late. The best example of manipulation in history was a man by the name of Joseph Stalin, or as some would say “ the Red Terror”. He manipulated the entire country of Russia into believing communism was in their best interests by using rhetoric in propaganda and relying on the Russian and Soviet people to create the image of himself as being the “Orthodox Saint”. Joseph Stalin even proclaimed “The way to handle people is to treat them like chickens. Take away everything they have by plucking their feathers and then throw them a few bread crumbs. They will then follow you forever”(A-Z quotes). Joseph Stalin truly believes that scaring people and taking away their resources is the first step in manipulating them to do what he wants them to do. Even with the countries horrible living conditions and very strict government, his people still believe he is the “Great Leader” and literally see him as a God. Kim Jong Un is selfish, power hungry, and lies to his people, clearly representing a manipulator. National Geographic sent a team of researchers into North Korea disguised as eye doctors to find out how manipulative Kim Jong Un would be and the results mortified them. The doctors discovered that the majority of the people were malnourished and in terrible physical health. Over half of the country was in poverty and only lived off of popcorn kernels and grains of rice. Additionally, almost all of the people in poverty received little to no health care and instead of paying for their people's well being and health the government spent over 30% percent of their GDP on military weapons and bombs (The Washington Times).
