Living Above Society’s Manner
Unfaithfulness, betrayal, and treachery, these words describe the opposite of what traits a married couple should possess. F. Scott Fitzgerald brings multiple affairs to life, as I read, The Great Gatsby, I could not resist the urge to keep going. The drama in this novel engulfed me, as characters learned of the private lives of their partners and the turmoil it creates at the end of the novel is amazing.
The book is written in first person narration and the main character, Nick, presents himself as the author writing about when he moved to West Egg in the spring of 1922. Nick is the only person knowledgeable of every persons’ secrete double life but remains quiet. The theme is the lowering of moral values, and this plays a role in Nick’s decision to remain quiet about the affairs. …show more content…

The retelling of his experiences while living next to Jay Gatsby gives the reader the sense of his maturation and differences in personal values. Nick saw every persons’ true colors and did not see eye to eye with them. He thought, “[t]hey were careless people… they smashed up things and creatures and retreated back to their money… and let other people clean up the mess they made” p.180.
Fitzgerald’s writing style is easy to read and comprehend. The narrator’s voice was somewhat cynical and ironic, and it builds up the events leading to the climax wonderfully. An example of his tone is, “[t]here is no confusion like the confusion of a simple mind…” p.125. Fitzgerald describes scenes, people, and feeling in details that paint pictures in your mind as you read.
