Messengers, Not so Reliable In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, communication does not always work. The messengers often get there too late and the character most likely dies or misses a key part of the unfolding story. The Friars that are sent out to give a letter to someone that could help another person, aren’t delivered or are not delivered in time. Which ends up killing a character off or them not hearing of a plan. Miscommunication also shows up when people lie to each other or keep secrets. These lies start at the very beginning of the play when Romeo and Juliet meet at her party, and fall in love, but keep it to themselves because of their families’ feud. By the third act there have been numerous lies, secrets and miscommunications. Outside the party Tybalt, Mercutio and Romeo were arguing with each other for most of the beginning of the third act. Tybalt was insulting Romeo because he is a Montague. Mercutio got upset with Tybalt for calling Romeo names and insulting him, so he stepped in wanting to fight him. The letter was telling Romeo to come to the Capulets vault when Juliet awakes from her slumber so that they could get married. But Friar John was delayed, and did not get the message to Romeo. So Romeo broke into the vault and saw Juliet “dead” and drank the poison that he had on him. Moments later Juliet awakes from her sleep and sees Romeo dead next to her along with the poison bottle.
