Insecure people can make themselves happy by making others unhappy. Their insecurity serves as a defense mechanism that protects their ego and by bringing others down, they can achieve psychological relief and it raises their self-esteem. In the Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald implies that insecurity can lead to people controlling and manipulating others to feel better about themselves, through Tom Buchanan’s treatment and manipulation of Daisy and Myrtle both physically and emotionally, and Tom’s way of degrading George Wilson and Gatsby based on their intelligence and wealth status. Tom’s insecurity is most apparent with his relationship with Daisy because Tom allows himself to do anything he wants, but if Daisy does the same thing he gets upset and undermines her intelligence because she is a woman.
In this scene, Gatsby is trying his hardest to win back Daisy even though previous attempts were unsuccessful. In this attempt, Despite Gatsby’s efforts, he watches Daisy vanish into her, “rich, full life,” (Fitzgerald 149), Gatsby in this scene is left with nothing but his own feeling of still being married to her even though shes not there with him. With these feelings, Gatsbys emotions begin to show when he comes to the realization that he'll never get her back. Gatsbys dream of getting Daisy back to fall in love with him is seeming to be getting further and further away from reach as he watches her basically having her best life. Gatsby's obsession with Daisy goes beyond reason and he becomes nearly consumed by his own illusion, as he writes, “No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart.”
Another factor contributing to the struggle of Both Holden and Gatsby is their obsession with an immature ideal they hold for the future. The characters in the novel pretend that they have their lives all figured out, but through their successes their downfalls and emptiness can be seen, to prove that money cannot buy happiness. Jay Gatsby is the newest and upcoming star in New York during the 1920’s. Through his business and inheritance he is one of the richest men of his time. One may think that his abundance of wealth would lead him to be eternally happy, but he is the opposite. Gatsby longs for his love of Daisy, which is his personal American Dream.
In the novel, “The Great Gatsby”, in chapter 3, Gatsby’s behavior when he would do his parties would be unusual because he would not participate in his own festivities. He would throw the parties for people to enjoy but would not behave like his guests would. He makes it look like if he wants something to happen but it never occurs yet. For example, Gatsby’s odd behavior is shown when he Nick finds him “standing alone on the marble steps and looking from one group to another with approving eyes.” Gatsby does this in a way of illustrating that he might see someone who he has been waiting for long period of time.

Nick the narrator tells the story about his close friend, Gatsby, who was in the military when he met Daisy (Nick’s cousin), and had instantly fallen in love with her. Gatsby left her because of his job in the military and Daisy married a rich man named Tom. Soon Gatsby found out that the reason Daisy married Tom was because of his money and nothing else.

The Economic of Happiness Some people in this world say we are attracted and find our happiness towards things we find most important to in our lives which are considered Economic Concepts. In the book, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it shows great examples with multiple types of Economic Concepts that make up the book as a whole. Without these concepts being used in the book, the story couldn’t be told the same. Even though the book is a fairytale, it can still relate to the real world.
When you first ever hear about “The American Dream,” you visualize great luxury, a picture-perfect picket fence, and a high social status. This impractical idealism is solely based on the foundation of “money buys happiness.” It is so inaccurate, considering those with the most riches and power always seem to want more. F. Scott Fitzgeralds novel “The Great Gatsby,” demonstrates how your biggest dreams can quickly become your worst nightmare. Fitzgerald uses the Buchanans, Myrtle, and Gatsby to develop his theme of the corruption and disillusionment of the American Dream.

Scott Fitzgerald, and the poem, “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson, both authors are in fact pointing out; don't judge someone for how they look or what they posses, because no one knows what they feel inside and what they are living. As the final lines of the poem get closer, it becomes more clear that the author's point is; Luxury does not fulfill someone's life. The people in town see Richard Cory with all his luxuries and wish to be in his place, “In fine, we thought that he was everything/ To make us wish that we were in his place” (Robinson 11-12).

At first, all of the characters are portrayed as happy people who enjoy where there lives are at. As more is revealed about who the characters actually are, it is made apparent that none of them are actually happy with their lives. When Daisy finally makes her decision on who to stay with it is confirmed that neither her nor Tom are truly happy, but aren't unhappy either. Fitzgerald allows for inferences on Gatsby’s happiness in the upcoming chapters through his description of how he watches over the house.
