Twelfth Night is one of William Shakespeare’s more famous plays. There are many aspects of it dealing with comedy, drama and of course love. There are many obstacles when in love and Shakespeare uses many examples within his play. Love is not always how it is pictured in the fairy tales. The feeling of love can have its obstacles. In Shakespeare’s play there are many modern examples of obstacles dealing with love. Viola who was in a shipwreck had found herself in Illyria. Wanting to serve the duke of the land, she disguised herself as a fourteen year old looking boy named Cesario. Orsino, the duke, had found himself in a love obstacle before Viola showed up. Shakespeare has implanted another love obstacles. Olivia has fallen in love with a mistaken indemnity. She believes she is in love with Cesario, not knowing it is Viola. “I left no ring with her. What means this lady?” (line 17). Viola has realized she is in a predicament. While Cesario is trying to win Olivia for Orsino, Olivia falls for him not knowing who he really was, the Duke is still in love with Olivia, and Viola now has feelings for Duke Orsino. Viola had no idea he was even alive after the incident. At the same time Sebastian did not know Viola was alive, let alone that she was also Cesario. “One face, one voice, one habit, and two persons!” (line 213). Orsino has realized there are two people who look identical, one being Cesario the other being Sebastian. Since Viola and Sebastian were twins, when Viola dressed up as Cesario she looked very much like him. With all the commotion Viola realizes her dead brother was indeed alive. “That I am Viola; which to confirm.” (line 251). Sebastian and Olivia had found love, and since he was alive Viola could reveal her true identity. Orsino has found out about Cesario’s true self and is attracted to her. While this is happening Maria and Malvolio have encountered each other. Malvolio had realized that Olivia never loved him or wrote the letters. He was very much upset. “Cesario, come for you shall be while you are a man.” (lines 380-381). At the end up the play Orsino asks for Viola’s hand in marriage.
