Have you ever seen a hero that can stab a cyclops in the eye and fight every little challenge he faces? Odysseus can and proves he did through all of the Odyssey. He uses three huge, heroic qualities to do these on his way home from the ten year Trojan war. Homer writes and explain Odysseus’s ten year journey home where, in fact, he proves in many instances that he is a epic hero. Still on his way home, Odysseus faces many challenges where he exercises his ability to endure pressure and damages. For example, Odysseus and his crew get trapped in a cave with a cyclops. He shows his endurance while stabbing a large spike in the cyclop’s eye. “Straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye, sand I leaned on it turning it as a shipwright turns a drill in a planking”(Beers and Odell 765). Also, Odysseus had to travel to The Land of the Dead to learn his destiny. His source of the destiny comes from the famous blind prophet, Teiresias. Odysseus must perform a ritual and raise Teirasias from the dead.“From every side they came and sought the pit with rustling cries; and I drew sick with fear. But presently I gave command to my officers to flay those sheep the bronze cut down, and make burnt offerings of flesh to the gods below— to sovereign Death, to pale Persephone.”(Beers and Odell 776). Furthermore, Bruce S. Thornton agrees again by stating “Odysseus’s other representative quality, endurance, is also made necessary by the harsh world into which we are thrown.”(45). Odysseus endurance to fight opponents come along with much
