What would you do if you were gone from your family for 20 years and you just randomly just turned up again? You would probably be so overcome by all of the emotions that you are feeling at that moment. After the Trojan war, Odysseus found himself lost at sea. It was just him, his men, and his boat. Odysseus should not be considered a hero, despite he does have many heroic traits that consider him a heroic person. For example Odysseus is brave, he is intelligent, and he is also skillful.
The first reason why odysseus is an epic hero is because he is brave. “ After he plundered the stronghold on the proud height of Troy.” (1104 4-5) Odysseus showed bravery here by invading the stronghold and taking over. If Odysseus was not brave he would not have even tried to take over the stronghold, and he would not have even been a soldier in war. “While he fought only to save his life, and to bring his shipmates home.”(1104 9-11) Odysseus never gave up trying to get his men and himself home. He always thought for the best of the shipmates and himself. Odysseus always risked his life to help save the lives of others. There are many more traits that make Odysseus a hero.

“To keep their courage up: no quitting now.”(1118 285) Odysseus comes up with a plan to get out of the cave without the cyclops waking and killing them all. He also can not kill Polyphemus to escape, because the boulder would still be stuck at the front of the cave and they would be stuck. “Now listen to your orders: when the time comes, those gentlemen, to a man, will be dead against giving me bow or quiver. Defy them. Eumaeus bring the bow and put it in my hands there at the door…” (1153 83-86) He makes a plan to take down the suitors and take back his kingdom.
