“The insuperable obstacles are not forever; believe in that, believe in yourself”. This is what my grandfather told me before he passed away six years ago. Since that moment, I was determined to achieve my dreams even if I have “insuperable obstacles” to overcome. Optimism is what my grandfather was talking about: to have hope when the situation seems difficult, to see the good side when it seems there are only bad things. As a result, I have always stayed positive since that moment because I am convinced that nothing is forever in this world. Keeping a positive attitude against different academic problems I have experienced and fighting for my personal goals through believing in myself are some of the reasons I am an optimistic person.

I do not know anyone without a goal in their life. Optimism and purposes are related because optimism helps the person to get motivated and to keep trying to achieve the dreams of one. When my grandfather passed away, I became determined to honor God and him through the achievement of my goals because I knew that they can happen even if many friends, professors and myself sometimes tell me that my dreams are impossible to achieve. I always joke with my friend about to work at the NASA one day because it seems possible, but it has been one of my biggest dream since I was a kid. I think about it and I can say that if I want to achieve it, I can do it. Now that I am in the U.S.A., I will try to work there because I imagine a great future working there. Now my goal is to see myself three years graduated and to see my family proud of me, to see them a longed for smile. It is not easy. The schedule is very complicated where the classes are almost at the same time, the assignments of each classes are a lot and the material of each subject are difficult to understand at the first time. I always try to gain time doing a schedule every day because I see myself as I wish in a future and that my effort will be rewarded. My goals make me feel motivated to keep moving on even if I have failed before. During the last semester, I was not the student I would like to be because I have had some problems with my English. Basically, it was hard to adapt myself into a new culture because I had never travelled or stayed in other country. I got a C+ in my first midterm test of Engineering Concepts and I exclaimed, “Why me?” Although the grade scared me and made me feel unable to recover the grade, I remembered my main goals and I considered that failure was part to achieve them as well. Instead to be regretting all the time about the grade, I made a plan to improve the grade at the end of the semester, and finally, I got an A that made me feel satisfied. The key point was to remember my main goal: graduating from JBU. This helped me to be encouraged and to keep moving
