Rowan Reinhard Mr. Smith Psychology 4/25/2024 PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) Synopsis: The film American sniper is about a Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, who became an iconic sniper while serving time in Iraq. His ability to aim and hit super precisely made him able to save countless lives. The unfortunate truth is how the war affected his brain. When Chris is not deployed anywhere and at home he severely struggles with PTSD, he is always feeling on edge and disconnected from his family. The film really dives into the impact of war on a soldier’s psyche, showing how tough it can be to adjust back to a civilian’s life after combat and seeing all of the violence that occurred. A scene that stands out to me that depicts PTSD is when Chris was watching TV, but it’s actually turned off, and he is lost in his thoughts, showing how mentally he is still in the war zone. This usually affects anyone who has gone through a distressing or life-threatening situation, such as combat, natural disasters, physical or sexual assault. You can obtain PTSD from many things, but these few examples are just the most common examples. Symptoms of PTSD can include flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, and changes in mood and behavior. There are several treatments available for PTSD. CBT, which is cognitive- behavioral therapy. EMDR: Which is the patient being prescribed medication to help process traumatic memories. Another treatment that is newer and not legal yet inside the states is where they use psychedelics to help treat the patients with PTSD. This disorder is somewhat curable, it just takes lots of time and effort to help decrease the amount of traumatic stress you have. What Is Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
