Political Correctness Breeds an Offended Nation The American Post-Secondary Educational institutions have created an environment that disables their student body from receiving a complete and well-rounded education due to their persistent effort to be politically correct. Students and administrators of these institutions have jumped on board with legislators and policy makers in avoiding the risk of offending minorities of any fashion. This problem continues to reach extremes by causing dis-invitations of public speakers, trigger warnings in syllabi and codes that restrict different forms of speech on college and university campuses across the nation. Since the 1960’s The United States as strived to breed a population that doesn’t offend the other citizens of this country as well as those of the world. In today’s world this has come to be a fundamental custom practiced by the institutions that are educating the nation’s population. The institutions are simply setting a precedence for an offended population. Some college professors have gone to the extent of putting “Trigger Warnings” in syllabi for their courses. (Political 4) They claim that it is necessary to prepare their students for any type of material that may be covered in the course that could be interpreted as offensive or spark some sort of emotional response from past encounters in their student’s lives. Really? It’s a college course and education for that matter these students are not infants they are adults and should be able to understand that this is history and education. How do the educators of America expect to teach any type of history without bringing up situations from the past that may or may not be offensive to a student because of their sexual, ethnic, or racial background? (Political 3) Well here is the message being sent to the students of these institutions. If I do not want to hear it, I do not have to. If I do not agree with your views and politics, you will simply be uninvited from speaking. Wrong! There is no control in the real world and being taught that you can simply state that you are offended will excuse you from what is being said is absurd. The amount of dis-invitations in the year 2000 was around 7.5 per year and from the year 2012 on it has jumped to 25 per year.
