Prejudice causes problems for communities. Great examples of prejudice causing trouble for communities are in To Kill a Mockingbird. Everyone in the small town of Maycomb describes Boo Radley as an awful human being but n one has actually met him. When Scout wanted to know what Boo was like, she soon found out: “Jem gave a reasonable description of Boo: Boo was about six-and-a half feet tall judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained-if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time (Lee 16). When Jem describes Boo to Scout he portrays Boo as a monster, when in fact, Jem has never seen Boo. the community has spread their ideas and beliefs on what they think Boo looks like based off their curiosity and little information regarding the man. When Jem and Scout were heading to town they got into a dispute with Mrs. Dubose. Mrs. Dubose continuously shouted at Jem and Scout saying, “Yes indeed what has this world come to when a finch goes against his raising? I’ll tell you!’ She put her hand to her mouth. When she drew it away, it trailed a long silver thread of saliva. ‘Your father’s no better than the niggers and trash he works for!” (Lee 135) A hateful disposition was placed on Atticus along with the rest of his family because of his appointed client. Atticus was representing a person of color in a court case which caused a wedge to be driven between the rest of the Maycomb community and the Finches.
