The theme of prejudice is a main topic throughout the novel. The novel takes place before the civil rights movement in Maycomb County, Alabama. The story follows Atticus,Scout,Jem, and Dill as they journey through a world of prejudice towards black people. Atticus who is a lawyer is defending Tom Robinson who is accused of rape. The trial seems rigged as Tom is black and the accuser saw that as an opportunity.
Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, the author, Harper Lee, argues that the unequal treatment because of race, gender, or social status is unfair. Harper Lee uses many ways to show social inequality, one example is the judgment shown to those of the lower class. On Scout Finch’s first day of school, she gets into trouble trying to explain why Walter Cunningham, a boy who comes from the lower class, does not have food and refuses to borrow money from their teacher, Miss Caroline. Scout gets in trouble and hits Walter later at recess, but then Jem comes over and invites him to their house to eat. While at the Finch’s house, Walter politely asks for molasses and pours it all over his food.
The novel To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee has many powerful characters that have been greatly affected by the prejudice system back in the 1930s. Tom Robinson, Dolphus Raymond, and Boo Radley are all characters from this novel who have had biased accusations made against them. Tom Robinson, a twenty-five year old black man with a family of his own, was falsely accused of raping nineteen year old Mayella Ewell. Dolphus Raymond is a white man who is married to a black woman and is profoundly judged for his decisions. Boo Radley is a very mysterious character in this book, he has a very parochial outlook on things as he has hardly ever left his home.
Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird has a recurring theme of prejudice. Throughout the novel the narrator Scout Finch, Arthur “Boo” Radley and colored people are faced with prejudice. Prejudice is an assumption about someone based solely on what they believe is true or on what they were told or taught. Scout experiences prejudice because of her age, Boo because he is seldom seen and colored people because of the color of their skin.
Austin Owen Ms.McGlashen English 11 2nd hour Prejudices People A wise man once said,” All men are created equal.” That man was Thomas Jefferson. In the Tom Robinson trial tho, it was more like,” All WHITE men are created equal” and that is not far. That is shown in the book To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
There were many examples of prejudice in “To Kill a Mockingbird”, but a few of them were much more noticeable than others. There was a great deal of prejudice against black people, specifically Tom Robinson, in this book, this was largely because of the time era this book was set in and, because this book was set in a predominantly slave state after the slavery abolition act. There was also an abundance of prejudice against Boo Radley just because they didn’t know who he was and as a community they deemed it necessary for some explanation of him staying inside all the time. Both of these men faced the consequences of rejection from society just because there was prejudice against them.
Prejudice beliefs Southern trees bear strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. (Billie Holiday and Abel Meeropol, 1937) Strange Fruit, written while lynching occurred, nauseates me as Billie Holiday and Abel Meeropol show the everyday horror living in the south. The poem prompts the realization of lynching that existed in our society.
It was also shown when there were unfair accusations towards Tom Robinson. Because of stereotypes, they couldn’t see the truth to what he had done. Although judging seems bad, it is the actions that come from our own opinions that can lead us to make mistakes.
The Prejudice of Maycomb County Prejudice has plagued the United States of America for decades, and still plays an important role in the lives of everyday people today. Moreover, it can be in the form of racism, sexism, classism, or one of many other countless methods of presumption towards others. Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, chooses to illustrate the prejudice of Maycomb County through the use of characters’ actions and dialogue. Aunt Alexandra may be full of pride, but she is prejudice nonetheless.
One of To Kill a Mockingbird’s main themes is discrimination towards race, and there are many examples and forms of racism in the novel. However, Atticus was not a racist person and he raised his children to be the same way and to treat everyone fairly. The biggest example of discrimination is when Tom was accused of a crime that he did not commit, then he was found guilty even though Atticus had made it very clear that he has innocent. Another examples of discrimination is when Aunt Alexandra doesn’t want Calpurnia to be in the house because of her race. Discrimination does not necessarily have to involve race, but it can also involve gender.
It is in Harper Lee’s “How To Kill A Mockingbird.” that the issue of Prejudice is shown throughout the novel. It is apparent in the novel which exhibits the unethical idea of individuals, particularly
Cultural norms are what make and shape a society. They are the guidelines, and or patterns, that are to be followed, in order to be considered a normal, typical, everyday citizen. As such, it does not matter if the norms are right or wrong. As long as the citizen is still a part of their society, right and wrong does not matter, as far as they are concerned. In the case of To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the cultural norm, of Maycomb County, embraces the wrong, in the form of extreme prejudice behavior.

What if you were discriminated just because of your skin color? In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, it was a very racist time black people were hated and discriminated. White people would always say the word “nigger” which was a racist term for black people. Even children would say “nigger” as if it was a common word and was no big deal. To Kill A Mockingbird evils of racisms because African American were hated was not treated fairly.
Racism and Prejudice In the present world racism and prejudice are not so common as it was in 1900, when Harper Lee wrote the book “To kill a Mockingbird” Harper Lee writes about Scout, who is a seven year old girl that s innocent at the beginning of the book As the book ends, she gets to know about all the things that this bad world has in it. In “To kill a mockingbird” Harper Lee uses Scout to show how people prejudge others on race, way of living and gender expectations. Scout is a little girl who sees how people judge each other on their race.
