Propaganda Term Paper Propaganda is something that is forming and shaping everyday lives in the world. Propaganda is consumed by everyone out there in society. It can be devastating and beneficial to society depending on how it is looked upon. In 1984 propaganda is used to show how the government, Big Brother, operates and how society should operate. Propaganda was used by government agencies overseas during World War I to shape opinion and “devoted massive resources and huge amounts of effort to producing material designed to shape opinion and action internationally” (Cooke 1). Cooke brings up the idea that propaganda was used in early times when international groups wanted to have an influence on society and make them think a certain direction. This is conveyed to be used to manipulate people in various ways but, are becoming resources people can use to help manipulate their targets. Additionally, propaganda is used as a source that the society can blame when their is a complete misunderstanding. In Shankar Vedantam’s article he directs how people “confront [their] crazy beliefs and usually blame propaganda” (Vedantam 1). Vedantam is believed to think that no matter what kind of information society hears it is all drawn back to the fact of how it is propagandas fault. In ANup Shah’s article she conveys how government explains their reasoning for war through the fact that “those who promote the negative image of the enemy may often reinforce it with rhetoric about the righteousness of themselves; the attempt is to muster up support and nurture the belief that what is to be done is in the positive and beneficial interest of everyone” (Shah 1). It is portrayed that the government is trying to get societal approval for going go war and why it is a good thing. The government uses the propaganda and media to tell the society that going to war for the reason was beneficial for society. Additionally, in Rand Waltzman’s article the government has been claiming that what society has been hearing is “bullsh..t” [and that it is a] weapon that is being used worldwide to fundamentally attack the medium of the press, and that the issue of freedom of the press is, in fact, a diversion” (Waltzman 1). The government is hereby turning articles into sources it can choose to its own benefits. They think by making society think that an article is wrong that they can pull the consumer onto their side and they will view it the same as them.
